West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio shares her vision for the future and reflects on the past years successes in the State of the City Address delivered at the monthly breakfast held by the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches.
Commissioner Shanon Materio was sworn into office on April 4, 2013 as West Palm Beach City Commissioner in District 5. Materio's service to the community began as a founding member of the South End Neighborhood Association (SENA), where she served as a Board Member for six years. As SENA President in 2005, she worked on a variety of committees and issues related to improving the Dixie Highway corridor.
As a West Palm Beach Commissioner, Materio has worked on numerous economic development projects for the City. She currently serves as the West Palm Beach City representative on the Palm Beach County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), she is the liaison for the Arts in Public Places Committee and most recently was appointed by State Attorney, Dave Aronberg to sit on the Pro-Viso, Sober Home Task Force. Materio serves on the Coalition for the Blueway Trail Initiative, and eco-tourism and economic development project that boast a membership of over 16 local governments including Palm Beach County.
Commissioner Materio previously served as a member of the Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency where she is credited for many of the CRA's major accomplishments such as completing renovation of two major gateways at 6th Avenue and 10th Avenue North under a budget of $13-14 million combined, and serving on the committee responsible for developing the $24.5 million NSP2 grant.
A proud business owner, Materio, President of McMow Art Glass, leads a team of creative artisans in manufacturing custom art glass designs for commercial, residential and religious spaces. McMow Art Glass is a world renowned art glass studio producing work for the global market place. In 2013, Materio was named as the Retailer of the Year, awarded by the Florida Retail Federation, recognizing retailers throughout the state of Florida for excellence in service and quality. She most recently was awarded the 2016 Athena Award Recipient presented by the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches.
Materio's work as City Commissioner has her focused on local initiatives with the MPO to study the Forest Hill exchange and corridor, requested and was granted the MPO start up fund for the South Dixie Road Diet, collaborating with neighborhood stake holders to build a new golf course club house and refine the current historic 18-hole West Palm Beach municipal course as well as the new design/build project for the South Olive tennis facility.
Materio has called Palm Beach County home since the early 1970's, and West Palm Beach since 1977. She lives with her husband, Philip Materio and raised her three children Jenny, Taylor and P.J in the South End. All three of her children attended South Olive Elementary. A graduate from Marymount Women's college in 1976 and continued studies at Florida Atlantic University through 1978, today Materio is proud to run the small business she founded in 1976.
