The Public Utilities Department (Utilities), as a public service provider for the processing and distribution of water, the treatment of sanitary waste, and the operation of the storm water system and flood protection — have a responsibility to take a leadership role in conducting all operational activities in a manner that protects the environment, as we provide for the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the general public.
In keeping with this vision and our responsibility to protect and conserve the environment, we are committed to exceed environmental compliance and:
  • Work together for continuous improvement
  • Avoid negative environmental impacts
  • Transform our Utility into an environmental and safety leader
  • Enhance communication of our vision
  • Readjust our everyday tasks to prevent pollution
The City of West Palm Beach Public Utilities Department has established, implemented, and maintains a procedure to identify all known environmental aspects of our activities, products and services within the defined scope of the EMS that we can control and have influence over.

The City of West Palm Beach: Public Utilities Department Achieves ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems registration from NSF International Strategic Registrations (NSF-ISR)

ISO 14001:2004 registration demonstrates the Public Utilities Department’s commitment to quality

The City of West Palm Beach Public Utilities Department has achieved ISO 14001:2004 EMS registration from NSF-ISR, a division of global public health organization NSF International. ISO 14001:2004, the world’s most recognized standard for environmental management systems, enables organizations to identify and control the environmental impact of its activities, improve its environmental performance continually, and implement a systematic approach to setting environmental objectives and targets to achieve these goals and to demonstrate that they have been met.

When the Public Utilities Department set out to implement the Environmental Management System in 2013, the goal was not only to identify areas of environmental risk throughout the Department, but also to standardize processes, increase communication between Divisions, and improve recordkeeping. Implementation required commitments from employees at all levels within the Department. Teams were created to assist each area with elements such as training, Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Plans, assessing environmental risks, and document control. Over 30 goals were created last year alone throughout the Department, leading to our achievement of continual improvement.

With the implementation of ISO 14001, the City of West Palm Beach Public Utilities Department has the knowledge, experience and capability to address current and future environmental concerns.  By certifying to ISO 14001:2004, they are continuing to prove their commitment to quality and precision.
