The West Palm Beach GreenMarket is Here!

24th Season opens with theme: “We PRODUCE Fun for Everyone!”

The City of West Palm Beach’s GreenMarket, which runs weekly from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. the first weekend in October through mid-to-late April, is producing fall fun for the entire family. Yesterday, Mayor Jeri Muoio, City Commissioners, locals, visitors, pets and more than 90 vendors kicked off opening day. The opening day festivities included a "produce race" featuring people in produce costumes racing to the finish lines. Mayor Muoio announced “Ready, Set, Grow!” and City Commissioners were at the finish line to announce the winner.

Mayor Muoio, Commissioners James, Lambert, Neering, Ryan, and Shoaf, plus Dep. City Admin. Miller and friends all helped kick off today's GreenMarket with the ceremonial Produce Run event.

The mission of the West Palm Beach GreenMarket is to provide the community with seasonal access to locally grown fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, plants and agricultural products. This season the City is “producing” fun for everyone by offering new vendors, in addition to activities for all. The GreenMarket features live music, unlimited mimosas for $10, free activities for kids, and plentiful green space and seating, which creates a morning full of fun and relaxation.

In addition, on the third Saturdays of the month, starting in November, visitors can take advantage of “By the Banyan” walking tours, which point out key historical locations throughout the downtown community. In conjunction with the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, the tours are led by local architect and historian, Rick Gonzalez, and start by the large banyan tree on North Clematis Street.

Special events at this season's GreenMarket will include:

  • Dog costume contest on October 27;
  • Veteran’s Day recognition on November 10;
  • Holiday entertainment on December 22;
  • Salsa Saturday on January 19;
  • The Strawberry Jam on February 9;
  • Earth Day celebration on April 20.

The 2018 – 2019 season will include more than 90 vendors selling locally-grown food, fresh flowers, decadent baked goods, vegan offerings, coffees, teas, spices, handmade items, homey finds, and much more. The popular market has even been visited by Martha Stewart, herself.

The GreenMarket is held on the West Palm Beach Great Lawn on North Clematis just west of Flagler Drive.

As part of the City’s overall go greener initiative, arrive by way of the City’s fun, free and popular trolley. The Yellow Line has stops near the market. Parking is FREE in the Evernia/Olive Garage, and there is a $5 flat rate in the Banyan/Olive Garage. Boaters may take advantage of the City's FREE public docks.

WPB, RELATED URBAN HOST GEORGIAN GARDENS CEREMONIAL GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

$21.5M project, partnership to address issue of affordable housing in City

Artist's rendering of Georgian Gardens Apartments

A new affordable housing project geared toward seniors is coming to West Palm Beach. On Wednesday, October 3, the City and Related Urban hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for Georgian Gardens Apartments, an affordable housing project for seniors.

Related Urban is developing the $21.5M, 87-unit, housing project located at 4330 Community Drive in the City of West Palm Beach. The City, through its HCD Department, has contributed $607,500 in federal program funds toward its development. The four-story building located on 2.73-acres is expected to be completed in December 2019. The project was designed by Modis Architects.

This new development is one way that the City is partnering with the community to address the issue of affordable housing.

Commissioner Keith James, Mayor Jeri Muoio, HCD Director Armando Fana, Commissioner Cory Neering, and HCD Programs Manager Jennifer Ferriol joined representatives from Related Urban, Modis Architecture and HUD for the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Georgian Gardens was originally developed as two phases of senior apartments in the mid-1990s. However, the first phase of Georgian Gardens was destroyed after being hit by hurricanes in 2004 and 2005.

The City of West Palm Beach HCD Department strives to improve the quality of life of City residents through the development of housing, social and economic opportunities. The City of West Palm Beach partners with our communities to preserve and enhance quality of life through an extraordinary focus on service. West Palm Beach is a vibrant, resilient, inclusive and safe world-class city.

City Hall will be closed on Monday, October 8, 2018 in observance of Columbus Day. There will be regular sanitation service on Monday.

There were also more than 31 sponsors from the private sector. Of course, there was plenty of business networking, and the conference closed out with recognition given to small businesses in 5 categories: Minority/Woman Business (MWBE) of the Year, Small Business Enterprise (SBE) of the Year, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) of the Year, Advocate of the Year, and Corporate Partner of the Year.

WPB to Celebrate International Walk to School Day

On October 10, 2018 the City of West Palm Beach, which adopted Vision Zero: Safe Streets for West Palm Beach, will partner with FDOT and the School District of Palm Beach County to celebrate International Walk to School Day. This is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration. Mayor Muoio and the City's Vision Zero team are proud to join this important event and are encouraging students to walk or bike to school safely. The whole community benefits from the effort to enable and encourage more children to walk or bicycle to school safely. Benefits include: less traffic congestion; safer streets where there are lower crash rates for all traffic modes; healthier habits and fun!
