WPB Communications Portal to Update Residents on Post-Irma Debris Pickup Progress

City of West Palm Beach residents and business owners now have a new information tool to learn about the City’s continued efforts to pick up Hurricane Irma debris and vegetation. Customers can now track the debris removal progress in their neighborhoods and learn the estimated dates for debris removal completion in their community by visiting the City’s new web portal: wpb.org/irmadebriscleanup.

“We are very pleased to roll out this portal to residents and business owners,” said Mayor Jeri Muoio. “The City of West Palm Beach is committed to picking up everyone’s debris as quickly as possible. We’ve made great progress, but there is still more to do. This portal communicates answers to the questions that many people are asking: ‘When will my debris be picked up, and when will cleanup finally be complete?’”

"By Thursday evening, the City’s Department of Public Works had removed more than 67,000 cubic yards of post Irma vegetation, construction and demolition debris,” said Kerlyne McHenry, City of West Palm Beach Industrial Engineer. “We are completing the ‘First Pass’ phase of cleanup and will enter the ‘Second Pass’ phase on Monday. With information updated daily, residents will now have access to the newest information about their debris pickup almost in real time."

The City conducts post storm debris removal in three separates phases--or "passes":

  •  Push Phase: As a first step of debris pickup after a storm, the City pushes debris off the streets which enables first responders and vehicles to move about the City.
  • First Pass: City's first attempt to pick up hurricane related vegetation, construction and demolition debris. Bulk regular pick up is suspended, and weekly residential garbage pickup resumed.
  • Second Pass: City's second attempt to pick up storm related vegetation and construction and demolition debris.

The Department of Public Works conducts “First Pass” and “Second Pass” in 40 different debris removal sections of the City. Residents are encouraged to “Know your DRS”—or Debris Removal Section. Customers can learn in which Debris Removal Section their home or business is located and, then, track progress in that section by visiting: wpb.org/irmadebriscleanup.

Residents living in private communities should note that the City is required to have a signed Right of Entry document before we can begin debris removal. This document must be signed by the president or property manager of the association.

Residents are reminded of these debris removal tips:

  • Don’t place debris in plastic bags, as debris in plastic bags must be processed in a different and more time consuming manner.
  • Don’t obstruct sidewalks, walkways or travel lanes. Keep storm drains clear to prevent flooding.
  • Do not place construction and demolition debris on top of the yard waste pile. Please separate piles into like materials.

For additional information about debris removal, contact the City of West Palm Beach hotline at (561) 822-2222.

Flagler Shore Project Kicks off on October 7

Starting on Saturday, October 7, 2017, a new project on the downtown waterfront will bring temporary changes to the Flagler Drive traffic patterns, along with enhancements to the public spaces.  Called “Flagler Shore: From Pavement to People,” the project will repurpose two lanes on Flagler Drive from Lakeview Avenue to Banyan Boulevard (.6 miles) to expand the waterfront public space for pedestrians, bicyclists, and merchants, as well as allow for additional programming.  Visitors can expect additional seating, bistro tables and chairs, public art, street vendors, street performers and more.

During the five-month project that will run through March 1, 2018, Flagler Drive will be reduced from four lanes to two lanes (keeping both southbound and northbound traffic flow). Coordinated by the City of West Palm Beach and the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency in partnership with the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority, the Flagler Shore project constructs a short-term design that allows the community to reclaim more public space and create a more dynamic waterfront.

In preparation for Flagler Shore, the two easternmost lanes of Flagler between Banyan and Lakeview are now closed. Two lanes remain open, and there is still two-way traffic flow.

To find out more about the city’s Flagler Shore project, to find the latest updates and activities, or to submit questions/comments, please call (561) 822-2222 or visit www.wpb.org/flaglershore.

West Palm Beach to 'Read for the Record'

Each year the City of West Palm Beach participates in the national Read for the Record campaign. City officials, employees and dignitaries will personally read to children at city recreation centers, local elementary schools, the City's downtown library and at many of the faith-based child-care centers. The City also encourages residents to take the time that day to read the book aloud to their own children or family members to encourage a love of literacy, books and family together-time.

Read for the Record will take place this year on Thursday, October 19, 2017, and the City of West Palm Beach will be reading the book, Quackers, written and illustrated by Liz Wong, a delightful story about a kitten who grows up believing he’s a duck, until the days he meets another kitten. What follows is a sweet tale about understanding, acceptance, and learning its okay to be whoever you want to be.

The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach has many copies of this year's book available at the library and copies of the ebook accessible in https://ebook.yourcloudlibrary.com/library/mycitylibrary. We encourage parents and caregivers to come in and check out the book! On the day of the event, the library will have a craft project to accompany the book, as well as a place for families to sit down and read the book together.
