CITIZENS BREAK GROUND ON CITY CENTER
January 8th, 2007,
10:00 a.m.
More than fifty West Palm Beach residents broke ground on the City Center project today, helping kick off a downtown revitalization that will bring the City a new, state-of-the-art library, a new City Hall, and a new photo museum by April of 2009.
City residents, business owners, and property owners all spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, joining dozens of the city’s Neighborhood Association Presidents in their support of this public project. Speakers at the event included an elementary school principal, a store manager who has lived in the area for nearly 40 years, a downtown businessman, and two families who have recently relocated to West Palm Beach. The event was emceed by Bob Nichols, Executive Director of Grassy Waters Preserve, Inc.
The historic City Center groundbreaking was attended by an estimated 400 people, many of whom helped the city break ground on the project. More than fifty gold shovels were used, with many children from the Pleasant City Multicultural Center participating and helping turn some dirt.
City Center is designed to be a gathering place that is the educational, cultural, and civic foundation of our community. The project is being paid for without raising taxes, and will increase City efficiency by combining City departments currently housed in eight separate facilities in to one location.

DEMOLITION OF D&D CENTER SITE UNDERWAY
April 3, 2006 - West Palm Beach Mayor Lois J. Frankel joined City Commissioners in marking the start of the D&D Center site demolition. The D&D Center site is the future home of City Center, a civic complex that will include a new City Hall, library, photography museum, and parking garage. Once completed, the new City Hall will house an estimated 535 city employees.
“Today we’re tearing down a blighted building, but it’s what we’ll build here that truly matters,” said Mayor Frankel. It is expected the demolition will take two months to complete. [more details]
