ACCOUNTANT

SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, performs a variety of accounting functions and reviews, directs, and audits financial and accounting transactions; and performs related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order)

  1. Prepares, processes and audits banking, general ledger, transactions related to accounts payable, payroll and inventory.
  2. Prepares periodic financial reports for tax and special funds, forfeiture, fixed assets, payroll, HUD grant compliance and department budgets.
  3. Balances encumbrances, bank accounts, general ledger and subsidiary ledgers.
  4. Prepares journal entries and fund transfer requests.
  5. Audits accounts payable, utility tax, and daily cashier reports.
  6. Maintains documents and records related to financial analyses, statements, and reports.
  7. Communicates with other departments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves sedentary to light work in an office setting. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, lift light objects (up to 10 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. The City of West Palm Beach promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field, and one (1) year working related experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
