Training and Development Nuts & Bolts

Nuts and Bolts provides training on Family Medical Leave Act, Drug Free Workplace, Workplace Violence, document processing, leave administration, time and performance management, ethics, preventing workplace violence, and more.

The five-day program is open to current supervisors and aspiring supervisors.

Robin Hewitt"During the week, I've had a chance to role play different scenarios within groups and we learned ways of better handling situations before they get out of hand. I found that after taking this course, I believe I am a better employee, and I also have a greater understanding and appreciation of the supervisor position. The most important thing I learned is that anyone can be a supervisor, but to be a good supervisor you need to be a good listener, be fair, acknowledge accomplishments of peers and subordinates, work on departmental goals within the group, develop and encourage teamwork, and most of all, lead by example. Thank you for the opportunity to attend the class."
Robin Hewitt, Contract Specialist,
Engineering Services Department.

Gustavo Gonzalez"Completing Nuts and Bolts training and applying the curriculum has been helpful in my day-to-day duties. For example, I’ve recognized an increase in the production of work due to implementing the Time Management module, especially when emergencies are involved. Also, applying what I learned during the Progressive Discipline module has made it easier to handle performance problems such as attendance, insubordination, and dealing with difficult situations. I recommend Nuts and Bolts to all supervisors as you will learn proper City methods and follow up procedures." Gustavo Gonzalez, Utility Locator Leader
Public Utilities Department.

Poonam Kalkat "I can truthfully say that the Nuts and Bolts Supervisory Training Program was helpful. For me specifically, the material addressing City policies in regards to leave of absence, sick leave, and FMLA was useful as it helps me guide my technicians through the policies. Another area that I found helped me in the day-to-day of running the water lab was using employee performance feedback forms. This is a really helpful tool at the time of performance evaluation. Based on the training, I encouraged the Laboratory technicians and supervisors to track performance issues in a constructive way and follow up wherever needed. This training also allowed me to be more aware of the diversity in my work environment and be more open to different work cultures that we all come from. I would recommend the training for all supervisors as it allows you to sit back and rethink strategies that you use and also teaches you new strategies for a better work environment. Last but not least, for a person who was new to the organization, it allowed me to meet other supervisors and field ideas"
Poonam K Kalkat PhD., Laboratory Manager
Public Utilities Department .
