You may have been taught not to brag to other people and may feel uncomfortable focusing on yourself when applying and interviewing for City jobs. However, this is the perfect opportunity to brag and promote yourself. After all, you must first prove your skills, abilities, and accomplishments before you receive a promotion. This professional development series will enhance your ability to "sell" yourself and help you compete against both internal and external candidates for future City vacancies. The program contains three modules.
- The Do's of Completing the City's Employment Application and Developing a Winning Resume - You will receive basic, step-by-step, information on resume writing and completing the City's employment application correctly in this class. Remember, a good application and resume will increase your chances of being chosen to be interviewed.
- What is Networking? - Learning about other City jobs can be extremely helpful in planning your career. One way to accomplish this is to meet with other City employees, or to "network", and familiarize yourself with the educational requirements, duties, and responsibilities of different positions.
- Get Ready. Get Set. Interview - Have you ever arrived at an interview unprepared? Research shows most people don't get jobs based on qualifications alone. Being positive, confident, and prepared at your interviews are key to landing a new position. This class will cover important interview skills such as what to do before, during, and after an interview, and how to dress. It will also introduce you to other winning strategies.
"I was skeptical (about the classes) at first, but now I highly recommend this program. HR has new measures to help us with our skills and this program will help you." Dorothy Scott, Accounting Clerk, Finance Department.
"Well I can say it has taught me a lot of things I didn't know about how to properly fill out an application, the different types of resumes, the do's and don'ts of interviewing and networking. Mike did a thorough job of explaining the material and through class interactions gave us not only the tools but the confidence we can use in the future. I can say I strongly recommend this class to all employees to sharpen their skills for better results in their quest for advancement in the future" Partick Aceti, Sanitation Equipment Operator, Pubic Works Department
