City Water Conservation Project Honored

March 30, 2007 – An innovative City of West Palm Beach water project has been recognized with a prestigious conservation award. The Wetlands-Based Water Reclamation Project, which allows highly-treated wastewater to be used to restore environmentally-sensitive wetlands, has been honored with the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) David W. York Reuse Award.

“This is a great honor for this one-of-a-kind project,” said Assistant City Administrator Ken Rearden. “Our City is being recognized as a leader in the effort to conserve water and protect the environment.” The City will accept the award at the Florida Water Resources Conference on April 17, 2007, in Orlando, Florida.

Mayor, Commissioners Tour Coleman Park Neighborhood

03/28/07 - City of West Palm Beach Mayor Lois J. Frankel will join City Commissioners, City staff members, and concerned residents on a bus tour of the Coleman Park area on Saturday, March 31, 2007 from 10:00 A.M. to Noon.  The bus tour will begin at the Coleman Park Community Center, located at 1116 21st Street, at 10:00 A.M.

City staff will tour the neighborhood with residents in an effort to assess code, police, and other community issues.

Native Plant Sale Helps Residents Learn How to Keep Yards Healthy During Water Restrictions

03/27/07 - The City of West Palm Beach’s Grassy Waters Preserve will host a native plant day and sale on Saturday, March 31, 2007 from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the Everglades Pavilion at Grassy Waters Preserve, 8537 Northlake Blvd.  The sale will be held on the north side of Northlake Boulevard.

This immensely popular event features thousands of native Florida plants.  Among the items on sale are native plants that require minimal watering, trees and shrubs that attract birds and butterflies, and wildflowers.

Visitors can also take advantage of the many educational opportunities, including learning how to use water-wise native plants to help maintain a healthy, low-maintenance yard during water restrictions.

Former Drug House Becomes New Police Substation

March 22, 2007 – A new City of West Palm Beach Police Department community substation has opened on 1010 10th Street, completing a dramatic turnaround for a property that was once a drug house and a major problem spot in the surrounding neighborhood. The new substation will greatly increase police presence and visibility in the area, just off North Tamarind Avenue.

The station was dedicated by Mayor Lois J. Frankel, City Commission President Isaac “Ike” Robinson, Jr., Police Department leaders, City leaders and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) leaders. Members of the public and the neighborhood were invited to tour the facility after the ribbon cutting.

Swearing In Ceremony for Mayor, City Commissioners

03/19/07 - City of West Palm Beach Mayor Lois J. Frankel, City Commissioner Isaac “Ike” Robinson, Jr., and City Commissioner Jeri Muoio will be sworn in to office at a special ceremony on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 2:45 P.M. in City Hall Commission Chambers, located at 200 2nd Street in downtown West Palm Beach.  The Mayor and the two Commissioners will take the City’s oath of office, and begin serving their elected terms immediately thereafter.

The swearing in ceremony will be carried live by West Palm TV (Adelphia Cable Channel 18) and can be also seen live on the internet through the City’s website by logging on to wpbtv.org.
