WPB Shuts Down Clematis Street Fountain; Educational Outreach Efforts Planned
April 26, 2007 - As part of the effort to lead by example and convey the seriousness of the ongoing drought, the City of West Palm Beach has shut down the Centennial Square fountain on Clematis Street. Though not required to do so, the City is shutting the fountain down in advance of the “Limited Phase 3” water-use restrictions.
“This drought is an urgent and worsening situation, and we need everyone to take these restrictions to heart and do their part to conserve water,” said Mayor Lois J. Frankel. “Shutting down our interactive fountains sends a message to residents that we are serious about conservation.”
Even though the Centennial Square fountain will be dry, it will continue to be a busy place for children and families. City staff members, including recreation professionals, will be on hand during special events, such as Clematis by Night, leading children in fun, interactive games. The staff members will also be helping teach children, and their parents, about water conservation. In addition to shutting down the Centennial Square fountain, the City will be shutting down interactive fountains and wet play areas in City parks.
The Limited Phase 3 water-use restrictions are expected to be enacted by the end of the week. Under Limited Phase 3, homes with odd-numbered addresses will be able to water their lawn on Saturdays only, from 4:00 A.M. to 7:00 A.M. Homes with even-numbered addresses will be able to water their lawn on Sundays only, from 4:00 A.M. to 7:00 A.M. Limited Phase 3 places a focus on cutting back residential yard watering because it accounts for nearly 50% of all water used.
