Teen Volunteers Helping Local Vet
Jun 18, 2007 - Mayor's Office
June 19, 2007 – Dozens of teenage volunteers participating in the “M-Fuge” program are spending part of their summer working on the home of a local disabled veteran. The teen’s activities are being coordinated through the City of West Palm Beach’s Vickers House.
“These teens should be commended for taking the time to give selflessly to others and help members of our community,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Lois J. Frankel. “I hope they inspire others to volunteer their time for the good of our City.”
The homeowner is a disabled U.S. Navy veteran who is paralyzed from the waist down due to a muscular problem. The teens will be clearing the home’s yard of debris, repairing and building fences, painting the home’s exterior, and making the home’s interior ready for extensive renovations.
M-Fuge is a mission camp designed for grade 7 through college. It encourages students to put their faith into action through events that include volunteering. West Palm Beach’s Vickers House helps coordinate local activities for the M-Fuge volunteers, who come from all over the southeast to volunteer in West Palm Beach.
“Teens from M-Fuge have been spending part of their summer here in West Palm Beach for the past eleven years,” said Vickers House Director Lela Jordan. “Even though they’re visitors to the area, they’re taking the time to make it a better place. Hopefully their example will encourage more local people to get involved and help others.”
