State of the Art Parking Facility Coming to WPB

08/31/07 - As part of the ongoing effort to provide safe, affordable parking for downtown West Palm Beach, the City is building a new, state-of-the-art parking garage in the 500 block of Clematis Street.  The facility will be the City’s first fully-automated parking garage, and will include both retail and office space.

“This new facility will be help meet the growing parking needs of people who work in or visit downtown West Palm Beach,” said Mayor Lois J. Frankel.  “In order to thrive, cities need safe, affordable, and accessible parking, and we’re proud to offer that here in our downtown.”

The 600-space parking garage is fully automated, and will not have any cashiers.  Customers will pay for parking using automated machines that will take cash, debit cards, and credit cards.  Customers will also be able to pay for their parking by using the machines before they return to their cars, eliminating the need for them to wait in checkout lines in idling vehicles.  This will reduce vehicle emissions in the garage.

“Combined with our pay-by-cellphone parking meter program, this new garage is part of continued innovation in our parking system,” said Parking System Administrator Sue Olley.  “We’re proud to offer our customers the best service we can, and as many options as we can, when it comes to paying for parking.”

The parking garage will cost an estimated $20 million.  The facility is expected to be open to the public in September of 2008.  The garage will have retails shops on the ground floor facing Clematis Street, and will also house the City’s Parking Administration offices on the Banyan Boulevard side.
