City Helping Hold Insurance Costs Down

Dec 05, 2007 - Newsletter

The City of West Palm Beach’s Construction Services Department received one of the highest possible rankings for how the department ensures public safety through thorough building code enforcement. The ranking reflects that the City has taken steps to minimize catastrophe-related damage, which will ultimately lead to lower insurance costs for residents.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO), an independent statistical, rating, and advisory organization that serves the property/casualty insurance industry, ranked the City’s Construction Services Department a “2″ for the one and two family dwellings category and a “2″ for all other construction. Classifications are on a scale of 1 to 10, with Class “1″ being the highest. The significance of ISO’s rating to the citizens and businesses of the City of West Palm Beach is two-fold. First, thorough enforcement of the building codes will minimize catastrophe-related damage resulting in less negative impacts to the lives of our citizens and businesses. Second, this rating ultimately leads to lower insurance costs.

ISO conducts audits of municipal building departments to measure and rate them on the building codes and their effectiveness in the enforcement of the building codes. According to the ISO, “Building code enforcement can have a major influence on the economic well-being of a municipality and the safety of its citizens.”

“I am very proud that the ISO has verified the entire department’s on-going commitment to ensuring public safety through thorough enforcement of the Florida Building Code. It is the department’s highest priority.” said Construction Services Department Director Neil K. Melick.

Residents can their insurance agent to ensure they are using the new improved rating to calculate property insurance premiums.

The City of West Palm Beach is getting kids hooked…

Putting ChallengeHooked on golf, that is! Mayor Lois Frankel (seen lining up a putt in this photo) and City Commissioners Ike Robinson and William Moss (seen watching the Mayor line up a putt in this photo) recently showed off their golf skills at the Second Annual Mayor and Commissioners Putting Challenge. The three duffers putted their way around a six-hole miniature golf course that was expertly laid out on the West Palm Beach Golf Course putting green. Despite a hole-in-one by Commissioner Moss, Commissioner Robinson was able to shoot the low score and take the trophy from Mayor Frankel, the defending champion.

The event also put local high school students to the test. Several of them competed in a long-drive competition, with prizes going to the winners. The putting challenge was an ace, serving as a great way to get young people interested in the game of golf. It also helps teach them about honesty, fair play and the other life lessons that the game instills.

“Free chlorine” treatment extended

Dec 03, 2007 - Mayor's Office, Public Utilities

(12/03/07)  In accordance with a program recommended by the Palm Beach County Health Department, the City’s altered water chlorination methods will be extended from December 4, 2007 to January 11, 2008.  The City is taking this measure to ensure our water supply remains free of bacteria.

Continuing on December 4, 2007, a “free chlorine” water treatment will be used to provide a somewhat stronger disinfection process than the “combined chlorine” treatment which is normally used.  The City will revert back to the “combined chlorine” method on January 11, 2008.

West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and South Palm Beach Utility customers may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in the tap water during this period; however, these temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects.  Tropical fish tank owners, hospitals and residents with pools should be aware of the chlorination changes and make adjustments accordingly.  Any questions should be directed to the City of West Palm Beach Central Operations Center, (561) 822-2222.
