Mayor Lois Frankel Highlights Major Strides in Public Safety, New Sustainability Initiatives in State of City Address

Jan 14, 2009 - Mayor's Office

(Wednesday, January 14, 2009)  Even with the troubling economic times facing our area, City of West Palm Beach Mayor Lois J. Frankel had plenty of good news in her annual State of the City address.  Mayor Frankel highlighted a major drop in crime, announced a new Sustainability Summit and spelled out plans to help stimulate the local economy.  Using the theme “Working Together,” the Mayor stressed the importance of alliances among the private, public and non-profit sectors of our community in order to sustain a good quality of life here in South Florida.

“Without a doubt, it will take all of us working harder, willing to sacrifice where necessary, and most importantly working together in order to keep our City moving forward,” said Mayor Frankel.

The Mayor praised Police Chief Delsa Bush for helping orchestrate an unprecedented decrease in crime.  In the past year, crime has dropped 19% City-wide in West Palm Beach.  In downtown West Palm Beach, including Clematis Street, crime is down 47% compared to 2006.  Overall, the crime rate is down a stunning 60% compared to ten years ago.  The drop in crime is documented by Florida Department of Law Enforcement statistics.

Mayor Frankel also made several major announcements concerning the City’s green efforts, including the creation of a City Office of Sustainability and the hosting of a community Sustainability Summit on February 25, 2009.  The summit will help the City create a blueprint for sustainability.

In order to help offset the loss of 5,000 construction jobs in Palm Beach County, the Mayor detailed the City’s aggressive plan to accelerate capital projects.  The 110 capital improvement projects, valued at approximately $125 million, will create more than 1,000 jobs without raising or creating new taxes.

Mayor Frankel also praised the accomplishments of the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency, which has been instrumental in the success of Pleasant City, Northwood Village, the new City Center and public library and the downtown waterfront revitalization.

The Chamber of the Commerce hosts the annual address, which is attended by approximately 1,000 people and is sponsored by Grand Bank & Trust of Florida.  The address will be replayed in its entirety on West Palm TV (Comcast Channel 18) and is available for online viewing at wpb.org.

Go Back 100 at Kaleidoscope 2009!

Jan 14, 2009 - Newsletter

Kaleidoscope 2009Guests to Kaleidoscope 2009 can Go Back 100! This wonderful, family-friendly event provides the community an opportunity to learn about their neighbors from around the world and see the cultural diversity in their own backyard. This year visitors to the event will not only be able to embark on a free trip around the world, but they will also learn about the many cultures and rich history that make up Palm Beach County. The “Go Back 100″ theme will educate students, teachers, parents and event patrons about the history of our area as the event marks the Palm Beach County and School District of Palm Beach County centennials.

This day-long multicultural festival will take place on Sunday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in downtown West Palm Beach and will feature villages from around the world, an international bazaar, ethnic foods and refreshments, an interactive kid’s area and two stages of multicultural entertainment. Kaleidoscope is a free event to be enjoyed by the entire family and is produced by the City of West Palm Beach in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County.

At Kaleidoscope, students from participating Palm Beach County schools partner with local cultural groups to explore and learn about their culture. The cultural groups work together with the students for approximately four months sharing their knowledge and creating an authentic representation of that culture in the form of a mini Epcot-style “village” they build onsite at the event. This year guests can experience and explore 15 different cultural villages at Kaleidoscope including Botswana, England, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Guatemala Maya, Greece, Haiti, India, Israel, Jamaica, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and a special historical Centennial Village.

In 2009, both Palm Beach County and the School District of Palm Beach County are celebrating their centennials. To help celebrate 100 years of Palm Beach County, Kaleidoscope will not only offer a look to our neighbors around the world, but will also offer a look back in time to the diverse and rich history of this community. Along Flagler Drive, guests can revisit the 1900’s by viewing historic Ford model T cars, visiting with Henry Flagler and a Barefoot Mailman, and visiting the special School District Centennial Village that will include a replica of the one-room Little Red Schoolhouse, the first school in southeast Florida.

For Kaleidoscope 2009, the West Palm Beach Public Library will present “Around the World in Eight Hours” to help kids learn about each country and collect their own Kaleidoscope souvenir. Kids will be introduced to one of the popular modes of transportation of the 1900’s, the Steamboat, and receive a ticket holder for their journey around the world. As they travel to each country throughout the event they will receive a unique ticket at each port of call that will teach them about their travels to that country. When kids have completed their trip “Around the World in Eight Hours,” they will also have a unique Kaleidoscope souvenir reminiscent of travels in the 1900’s.

Kids can also travel back in time and enjoy lots of fun and activities at the “Turn of the Century” All-American Kids Area presented by the City of West Palm Beach Parks and Recreation Department. Here, kids can learn about 1900’s Palm Beach County history and participate in activities and games that were popular 100 years ago including hopscotch, hoop races, marbles and more. Kids can also participate in a craft and make their own 1900’s toy, a wooden top.

Kaleidoscope is known for celebrating cultural diversity, and this year is no exception with tons of different international entertainment and a remarkable Celtic rock headliner, the Young Dubliners, – all for FREE! With three parades that march throughout the festival and two stages filled with unique ethnic performers such as a Japanese drum group, a Scottish Pipes and Drums band, a Brazilian dance group, a Mariachi band, and Native American dancers, everyone is sure to come across a sample of music and dance from around the world. Then, popular Celtic rock band, the Young Dubliners will perform at the Meyer Amphitheatre at 3:00 p.m. Guests can also check out student performances on the Kaleidoscope stage in The Palm Beach Post Park, just south of the Meyer Amphitheatre. Guests are sure to be thrilled with this year’s entertainment line up.

And finally, a trip around the world would not be complete without tasting the savory foods of each country and doing a little souvenir shopping. Kaleidoscope will feature savory foods from various countries around the globe to ensure guests have both a delightful and delicious time. Kaleidoscope will also feature an International Shopping Bazaar with unique vendors selling arts and crafts from around the world. Kaleidoscope 2009 is an event not to be missed – this exciting and interactive multicultural festival will overload the senses with lots of wonderful experiences!

Kaleidoscope 2009 is a family-friendly celebration of many cultures produced by the City of West Palm Beach in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County. Kaleidoscope has been judged the “Best Educational Event” and “Best Community Outreach Event” by the International Festivals & Events Association. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Meyer Amphitheatre in Downtown West Palm Beach. Features include multicultural entertainment, villages from around the world, kid’s interactive activities, ethnic foods and refreshments, and an international bazaar. Participating sponsors include National City, Palm Beach County, The Palm Beach Post, La Palma, 97.9 fm WRMF, WPTV NewsChannel 5, Comcast, the West Palm Beach Marriott, the Children’s Services Council, Coca-Cola, and Panera Bread.
