City Asking Residents to Cut Back

Mar 31, 2009 - Uncategorized

The City of West Palm Beach is asking all residents and homeowners to cut back their trees, bushes and shrubs, that is.

With hurricane season just six weeks away, the City is once again offering the very popular and successful “Amnesty” program.  Amnesty, runs through the end of May, encourages residents to cut back and trim their trees, shrubs and bushes prior to hurricane season, helping limit the potential for damage and debris during and after storms.

During the Amnesty months of April and May, the City offers FREE pickup of yard waste and vegetative debris, regardless of the quantity.

Homeowners win by getting their yard in shape and getting the trimmings picked up for free, and we all win when there is less damage during storms. Please cut back all trees, bushes and shrubs during the months of April and May and place the yard waste at your curb on your normal yard waste collection day.

This free pickup service is for City residents only, and does not apply to private yard services or contractors. Those services must arrange for their own hauling. To learn more about Amnesty, please call 561-822-2222.

City Encouraging Residents to “Vote for the Earth”

Mar 27, 2009 - Uncategorized

(Friday, March 27, 2009)  The City of West Palm Beach’s Office of Sustainability is asking residents to “Vote for the Earth” by turning off all their lights for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

People all over the world are being asked to turn off the lights in recognition of “Earth Hour.”  By saving energy, residents will be “voting” in favor of the earth and against global warming.

“Turing off the lights for an hour will save some energy, but more importantly it will raise awareness for the fight against global warming,” said the Office of Sustainability’s Penni Redford.  “Earth Hour is a great way to inspire people to be more energy-conscious and take action to reduce carbon emissions.”

West Palm Beach joins more than 1,600 cities in more than 80 countries that are participating in “Earth Hour.”  More information on the event can be found at www.earthhour.org.  More information on the City’s Office of Sustainability can be found at wpb.org.
