Weekly City Event Will Celebrate the Music of the King of Pop

cbn-09_-mj_center-box4(August 14, 2009 – West Palm Beach) Clematis by Night, the City’s Hot Spot to Chill, will celebrate the music of the King of Pop on Thursday, August 27 in honor of Michael Jackson’s birthday (August 29). This special Michael Jackson Birthday Tribute will “thrill” guests with a number of festivities for the public to enjoy and participate in.

Tony Wilson and the Godfather of Soul Band
Tony Wilson will electrify the audience with a tribute to the music of Michael Jackson while incorporating his own style, showmanship, charisma and dance moves. Tony, a Chicago native, has been crowned “Best Michael Jackson Entertainer,” he served as a body double and decoy for Michael Jackson during the “Victory” tour, and he even performed on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Tony recently released a song he wrote for Michael Jackson entitled “We Call Him Peter Pan” that he will perform at this special tribute. Tony will also mix it up with some James Brown tunes, as he has been endorsed as the YOUNG JAMES BROWN by the Godfather of Soul himself, and some of this own soul and R&B tunes.

Help Needed To Make Your City Clean

On Saturday, August 29, 2009 from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. join us for a morning of lake cleanup and weeding at Elders’ Cove in Dreher Park in West Palm Beach! As part of the International Coastal Cleanup under the direction of Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, we will be cleaning up the two northern lakes. A great opportunity to play in the dirt and support your exceptional neighborhood / regional park!

As volunteers, you will be working in sunny, wet and dirty conditions. It is strongly recommended that you wear closed-toe shoes such as old sneakers and wear hats for sun protection. A lightweight long sleeve shirt (old) can help protect against the sun as well. Please bring your own garden gloves for weeding. Plastic disposable gloves will be provided for picking up trash. Insect repellent and sunscreen are also strongly recommended.

Registration will begin at 8:00 am. Please sign in and receive instructions prior to starting cleanup. Community service hours are available for students – you must register and have the site manager sign off before leaving.

Cleanup Location:
Elders’ Cove, Dreher Park in West Palm Beach: the northern most portion of the park next to the North Lake and the earthen mound close to the Southern Blvd entrance into the park. The North side of Dreher Park is bordered by I-95 to the west, Southern Blvd. to the north, Parker Ridge Neighborhood to the east and Summit Blvd to the south. Entrances into the park are from Summit Blvd and Southern Blvd.

Drainage Improvements Continue

When: Beginning Monday, August 10, 2009
Affected Area: Forest Hill Blvd. at Martin Avenue

(08/07/09) As a result of a City of West Palm Beach drainage improvement project, Forest Hill Boulevard will be closed to traffic at Martin Avenue period of approximately 6 (six) days beginning Monday, August 10, 2009. The road is expected to reopen no later than Saturday, August 15, 2009. The City will be upgrading stormwater pipes, which will improve drainage and help reduce flooding in the area for both homes and businesses.

Residents, businesses, and their customers will continue to have access to their destinations along Forest Hill Boulevard during this period. Through traffic should use Southern Boulevard as an alternate route. Eastbound traffic on Forest Hill Blvd. should detour via Dixie Highway and westbound traffic should use Olive Avenue. Notices have already been sent to residents and businesses in the construction zone.

Eight Local Colleges On-hand at FREE Education Fair

(08/03/09) Thinking about your future? You can meet with local colleges and universities, get advice and feedback and learn about scholarship money all at the FREE “Get that Degree” Education Fair. The fair is being held on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the WPB Library’s Urban Living Room at 411 Clematis Street.

The schools on-site will be Barry University, Florida Atlantic University, Keiser University, Palm Beach Atlantic, Palm Beach Community College, Nova Southeast University, Union Institute and University and the University of Phoenix.

Help the City Protect Our Water Supply

  • Remove debris, litter, vehicles, boats, vegetation, fences, sheds and other structures from the City’s property along the lake’s shoreline
  • Remove all pipes that discharge into the lakes
  • Clean up all spills and leaks on driveways
  • Pick up all pet waste
  • Use low phosphorus or phosphorus-free fertilizers. Limit pesticide use. Dispose of all pesticides and herbicides properly
  • Direct downspouts and gutters into lawn and plant beds
  • Remove grass clippings so they don’t wash into the lakes
