‘Today’ show’s Ann Curry to lecture and open photo exhibit at the Photographic Centre

Dec 04, 2009 - Mayor's Office

ann-curryOn Saturday, Dec. 5, Ann Curry will lecture from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the opening of her photo exhibit, “Empathy” at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. Curry’s free lecture will be held in the Commission Chambers at City Hall. Curry’s photos will be on display through February.

Curry has taken her photos, which range from portraits of the Dalai Lama to children in Africa, as part of her news-reporting duties for NBC.

“My travels have convinced me that no human being is really foreign to another. We have so much in common; the truth is we are surrounded by our sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, each life precious. It is time for us to stand up against the suffering caused by genocide, war and ignorance. If we care enough about our human family, we can change the future.”

The photo center is located at 415 Clematis Street. For more information, please call 561.253.2600 or visit www.workshop.org

City Upgrading Homes, Improving Neighborhood

Dec 03, 2009 - Mayor's Office

New “Paint, Plant and Pave” Grants to Fix Up Homes Free of Charge

Dozens of local families will see their homes get new paint jobs, see cracked driveways get fixed and see new landscaping added to beautify their neighborhood—all as part of the City of West Palm Beach’s new “Paint, Plant and Pave” grant program.

City officials kicked off the program at the home of William and Lucille Washington.  The Washingtons have lived in their home for more than forty years, and were even married on the property.  The program will give their home a fresh coat of paint and add landscaping to their yard.

“For a family like the Washingtons, this program couldn’t come at a better time,” said Mayor Lois J. Frankel.  “This will bring some much-needed help to an area in need of redevelopment.”

The program provides homeowners in an area of the City with up to $6,000 in grant money to make improvements to the exterior of their home.  “Paint, Plant and Pave” is part of the Community Redevelopment Agency’s efforts to revitalize the Greater Northwest area of the City.  So far 35 families are signed up for the program and the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency plans to recruit dozens more.  The CRA has committed up to $330,000 dollars to the “Paint, Plant and Pave” program.

To be eligible for the grant, homeowners must live in a single-family home in the area that is targeted for redevelopment that is north of Banyan Boulevard, south of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and between the F.E.C. and the C.S.X. railroad tracks.
