Get Ready for Hurricane Season with ‘Amnesty’
Apr 10, 2008 - Hurricane Information, Mayor's Office
With hurricane season just a couple of months away, the City is once again offering the very popular and successful “Amnesty” program.
Amnesty encourages residents to get ready for hurricane season by offering FREE pickup of yard waste and vegetative debris during April and May. By cutting back and trimming trees, shrubs and bushes prior to storms, the potential for damage and debris during and after storms is limited.
Homeowners win by getting their yard in shape and getting the trimmings picked up for free, and we all win when there is less damage during storms. Please cut back all trees, bushes and shrubs during the months of April and May. Place the yard waste and vegetative debris at your curb on your normal yard waste collection day. The City will drop by and pick it up for free, regardless of the quantity.
This free pickup service is for City residents only, and does not apply to private yard services or contractors. Those services must arrange for their own hauling. To learn more about Amnesty, please call 561-822-2222.

Amnesty Helping People Prepare for 2007 Hurricane Season
Apr 03, 2007 - Hurricane Information
April 3, 2007 – popular City program that helps residents prepare for hurricane season is back. During the months of April and May, residents will once again be able to take advantage of “Amnesty,” a City program that provides free removal of yard waste and vegetative debris.
During Amnesty, the City will haul away residents’ yard waste and vegetative material FREE OF CHARGE, regardless of the volume. The program encourages residents to cut back trees, bushes, and shrubs before hurricane season begins, so that damage from debris will be limited during storms. Large trees should be trimmed back, away from power lines, phone lines, cables, and homes. Residents should place vegetative waste at the curb on their normal yard waste collection day. This free pickup service is for City residents ONLY. It does NOT apply to private yard services or contractors. Those services must arrange for their own hauling.
“The Amnesty program is one of the many ways the City helps the people who live here get ready for hurricane season,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Lois J. Frankel. “Now is the time to get your yard ready for hurricane season, so that when a storm approaches, cutting back trees will not have to be on your family’s checklist.”
During the 2006 Amnesty period, the City collected more than three million pounds of yard and vegetative waste, which represented nearly a 40% increase over 2005’s totals. The program not only helps limit the amount of debris during a storm, but also helps keep roads clear for emergency vehicles and reduces the chances that storm drains will become clogged with debris.
More information on the Amnesty program can be found at wpb.org or by calling 561-822-2075.
