WPB Library Drawing Thousands to Downtown Each Day
Apr 19, 2010 - Library
Library’s First Year at City Center Proves to be Overwhelming Success
(Monday, April 19, 2010) The City of West Palm Beach Library’s first year on Clematis Street at City Center drew thousands of people to downtown West Palm Beach each day and firmly established the library as an anchor of downtown activity.
Nearly 650,000 thousand people used the library from April 2009 to April 2010, a 33% increase over the previous twelve months of operation. Library customers took advantage of a wide range of programs and activities, using computers, checking out DVDs and books, attending yoga classes and much more.
“Our library is a place of learning and growth for people from all walks of life, but it’s much more than that,” said Mayor Lois J. Frankel. “It’s an economic engine for our City and our downtown.”
During its first year in its new location, the library saw a 68% increase in overall program attendance (including a 112% increase in adult program attendance), a 53% increase in free computer use, a 42% increase in items circulated and a 56% increase in reference questions.
Thanks to the library’s new automated materials check-out system, the increase in library use did not require increases in circulation staffing levels. Self-check transactions at the library increased 424%.
Anyone who works, lives or plays in West Palm Beach is eligible for a free library card. You can learn more about the library and the programs that it offers by going to mycitylibrary.org. You can also follow the library on Facebook and Twitter.
