How did the teens you know spend their Spring Break? About 30 local teens decided to spend theirs learning how to rescue victims from a fire, putting out a burning building and climbing fire department ladder trucks, all at a unique West Palm Beach Fire Rescue Department camp called “Firestorm.”
The camp is held every year, giving the teens (who must apply and go through a selection process in oredr to enroll in the camp) a first-hand look at what being a firefighter is all about. The teens learn leadership skills, hone their problem-solving abilities and build bonds that last a lifetime.
The firefighers who run the camp are there on their own time, volunteering to make a difference in the lives of the teens who attend. The help the campers with all sorts of drills and simulations, from rescuing a potential drowning victim to climbing a dark, smoke-filled stairwell with full firefighter’s gear on.
At the end of the week, the teens graduate from the camp with a strong sense of accomplishment and some great stories to tell their friends about the exciting and unique way they spent their spring break: Firestorm!
