City Preserving Open Space by Dedicating New Public Park

Dec 01, 2009 - Mayor's Office, Parks and Recreation

11457_192729922940_57227737940_2948034_2154671_nThe City of West Palm Beach is continuing its commitment to preserving open space and sustainability with the dedication of Gateway Park, a new 2 acre park located in the City’s downtown.

Appropriately named because of its location at a main entryway to the City, Gateway Park and the public art it contains were paid for entirely with private dollars, not tax dollars, through the City’s Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) program.  The park is located on Okeechobee Boulevard just east of Australian Boulevard adjacent to the West Palm Beach Marriott.

“This will be a beautiful park for all to enjoy instead of land for future development,” said Mayor Lois J. Frankel.  “And we did it all with private dollars—not taxpayer dollars.”

In 2004, the City Commission designated the land that would become Gateway Park as a site of civic importance.  In 2005, the City sold some of the parcel’s development rights to a private developer to be used on another site.  A portion of the money generated from the sale of those development rights paid for the park’s construction costs.

The highlight of Gateway Park is the sculpture “Arrived,” designed by Ulrich Pakker.  Mr. Pakker created the sculpture to be a “cordial, hospitable gesture” welcoming residents and visitors to our City.

Gateway Park was constructed by Wayne Villavaso Landscape Architecture, the Engenuity Group and Control Precipitation Design.  The West Palm Beach Marriott is supporting the dedication ceremony.
