Canal Cleaning: The Grounds & Canal Maintenance office, 822-2185 maintains the 14 miles of City owned canals. They are cleaned on a regularly scheduled basis. If, however, you are aware of a situation that is blocking the flow of canal water and requires immediate attention please notify us.

City Infrastructure: Call Public Utilities, 494-1040, Ask to speak to a Project Coordinator. They are available between 8 A.M and 4 P.M. Monday through Friday. City infrastructure, to include underground water mains, pressure mains, Stormwater, stormwater outfalls, sanitary sewer pipes and lift stations, roads, right of way, etc. are contained in City drawings. Cracked or Broken Sidewalks: The Streets & Drainage Unit, 822-2085 , will inspect the site, determine the extent of the work required, establish a work order and undertake that repair.

Dumpsters: Call 822-2075 are available for commercial refuse disposal. Pick-up on established routes is scheduled Monday thru Saturday. Please call for further information.

Garbage Cans: The City does not provide garbage cans. They are available commercially for about $10.00. The Sanitation Department, 822-2075, limits garbage cans to the 35 gallon size. Plastic cans are preferred and they must be designed with a secure top. Plastic garbage bags must be used to contain disposed items within the garbage can.

Garbage Disposals: This modern kitchen device can be extremely useful but can also wreck havoc on the Sanitary Sewer System. The problem stems from grease and oil being deposited in the disposal. These materials coagulate in sewer lines and cause blockages. Please put grease and oil in a plastic bag and place it in your garbage can. Your garbage can is the preferred method of disposal for all kitchen waste. We ask that you use your garbage disposal as little as possible.

Garbage (Refuse) Pick-up: 822-2075, Permanent Northern and Southern collection routes use Okeechobee Boulevard as the dividing line. Refuse is picked up on Northern routes on Mondays and Thursdays and on Southern routes on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Bulk items, to include furniture and appliances (except freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners) are picked up with refuse. Yard waste is picked up once per week and this collection is followed by street sweeping operations on the following day to ensure that all yard waste is collected and the collection points are left neat and clean.

Garbage (Refuse) Restrictions: The Sanitation Department, 822-2075 restricts the following items from disposal as garbage: Hazardous material to include paint, paint thinner and paint products such as shellac, varnish, etc. flammable materials of any type, batteries of any size, pool acid, and propane containers. These items can be dropped off at the Solid Waste Authority (call 640-4000 for the location nearest to you.) Likewise, sand, concrete, roofing and building materials are not acceptable for pick up and disposal as garbage. If you intend to remodel your home or undertake a major building project, contact the Solid Waste Authority (640-4000) for a collect bin or a recommendation for a private hauler who can provide the needed disposal services.

Landscaping/Streetscaping: Landscaping and Streetscaping are included in many City construction projects. Depending on the size of the project, City crews from Grounds Maintenance (822-2185) or contracted nurseries install trees and plants.

Mayor's Response Team: Mayor Frankel has established an on-call team to quickly respond to the needs of citizens and guest who call in with requests for assistance, complaints, or informational needs. The MAYOR'S RESPONSE TEAM (“MRT”) 822-1402 is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. , Monday through Friday. (The answering machine will record your concerns during non-business hours).
MRT responds to citizen requests and concerns for assistance, relays requests to the Mayor, and provides information to callers.
If you have a question or a problem with a specific department, please try to resolve your issue with that Department or Division. If you need additional assistance, call MRT for help. Street Lights Out: Call 822-2075 , Two, two man teams, working out of bucket trucks patrol the City and replace burnt-out bulbs on City street lights. The City of West Palm Beach owns most of its street lights, however, Florida Power and Light (FP&L) does own some lighting equipment and is reimbursed for its use.

Street Repair: Call the Public Utilities, Streets & Drainage Unit, 822-2085. Minor asphalt and concrete repairs can be addressed quickly. Resurfacing (Microsurfacing) of streets is accomplished by outside agencies on a contractual basis.

Street Signs: 822-2085. Street signs and traffic safety signs are fabricated and installed by the Public Utilities, Streets and Drainage Unit,. This group also paints parking lines and traffic warning markers on our roadways.

Street Sweeping: 822-2075. The City of West Palm Beach streets are swept on a regularly scheduled basis. Standard Northern and Southern sweeping routes have been established throughout the City. Okeechobee Boulevard serves as the North/South dividing line. Streets on the Northern routes are swept on Tuesday and Friday. Southern streets are swept on Wednesdays and Mondays. Emergencies, such as spills that present a driving hazard and require street sweeping, are handled on an individual basis.

Traffic Calming: Call 822-2085 for traffic calming assistance. A work order will be generated and a study undertaken. If the problem area meets established criteria, the City will install traffic calming devices (speed bumps) where appropriate.

Tree Trimming: Grounds and Canal Maintenance personnel (822-2185) trim tree branches that are impeding traffic or pedestrian walkways on City owned or controlled property. Dead trees are removed and often, replacement trees will be planted. There is a schedule for tree maintenance in neighborhoods throughout the City. Emergency conditions can be reported to Grounds and Canal Maintenance for quick action.

Vegetation Control: (Grass Cutting) Public Utilities, Grounds Maintenance personnel (822-2075) are responsible for maintaining the appearance of the grounds at the Police, Fire and Train Stations, the Water Treatment Plant, 100 plus Re-pump and Lift stations, parks, 37 miles of road right-of-ways, approximately 14 miles of canal banks and two flood control structures. Additionally, the Grounds Maintenance Unit assumes responsibilities for maintaining the appearance of various vacant lots in the City's possession. Maintenance personnel strive to maintain a mowing schedule of based on a two week cutting cycle.

Yard Waste: Public Utilities , Sanitation Department (822-2075) collects yard waste once per week, on a regularly scheduled basis. The following is our standard schedule for pick-up:
Monday: Zone # 1 24 th St. North to City line.
Tuesday: Zone # 2 Okeechobee Blvd. South to Southern Blvd. West of Olive Ave.
Wednesday Zone # 3 East of Olive Ave from Barcelona South to City line.
Thursday Zone # 4 Okeechobee Blvd. North thru 23 rd St .
Friday Zone # 5 Southern Blvd. to City line West of Olive Ave.
Residue should be stacked neatly at the curb. The following limitations apply: Tree trunks may not exceed 12 inches in diameter and 3 Ft. in length, tree branches should be no more than 4 to 6 feet in length, grass and weeds must be bagged. There is a ten-yard limit (4 feet high by 4 feet wide - 17 feet long) limit on yard waste piles and there may be no more than one pile per home per week. Note : The City does not collect yard waste left by landscape and lawn service companies. Service companies are responsible for the removal of all debris and trimmings from the property.
