WPB Celebrates Black History Month 2020

In celebration of Black History Month in February, departments throughout the City have planned various events to commemorate African American culture throughout the City’s history while looking ahead to a promising future. 

FREE EVENTS & ACTIVITIES!

Literature in Protest

Tuesdays, February 4 & 11(6:00 PM – 8:00 PM)

Mandel Public Library, 411 Clematis Street, Clematis Room, 3rd Floor

Come join Professor Africa Fine, Duke University Alumna and Professor of Literature at Palm Beach State College, as she illustrates the power of literature in cultural movements. Professor Fine’s lecture will highlight the contributions of Black men and women in literature and how they have affected social change. 

 

Graven Images Book Talk

Thursday, February 6 (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM)

Mandel Public Library, 411 Clematis Street, Clematis Room, 3rd Floor

Join Gail Tanzer, author of Graven Images: The Tumultuous Life and Times of Augusta Savage, for a presentation about this important African-American sculptor associated with the Harlem Renaissance. 

 

African Drumming

Saturday, February 1 (1:00 PM – 1:30 PM, For children in grades K-2,

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM, For children in grades 3-5)

Mandel Public Library, 411 Clematis Street, KidSpace, 3rd Floor

Afrique Ngozi Dance and Drum Inc. will present a lively African Drumming class for elementary age children. Explore basic drumming techniques while learning about the history of the instruments. 

 

Norton’s 3rd Annual “Celebrating Black Florida" Community Day - Pop-up exhibition: A Look Back at the Sunset Lounge

Saturday, February 22 (12:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m)

Norton Museum of Art (Maurer Lobby)

A historic exhibition showcasing the Sunset Lounge along with stories of several pioneers from the historic northwest part of West Palm Beach. The event is free and open to the public, and will include an afternoon of special tours, family workshops, talks, performances and more.

 

Bourbon & Bowties, Friday, February 28; 501 Rosemary Avenue

An opportunity to learn about the rich, black history of the historic Northwest neighborhood as well as opportunities for real estate and development. The event is a chance to network with influential pioneers from the community.

 

Community Crab Boil, Saturday, February 29; 600 4th Street

Guests will be treated to food and dessert menus from Trindy Gourmet featuring Lala’s Seafood House as well as performances by Abasi Hanif – “Livin The Rhythm,” The Special Formula Band featuring the Horny Horns and more!
