• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Must be a Florida State Certified Police Officer or currently enrolled or accepted in a State of Florida Criminal Justice Basic Recruit Training Program by closing date of application
• Successfully complete the Criminal Justice Institute Physical Agility test from a state accredited facility (valid for one year by the end of the application closing date)
• Capable of performing the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
• Have a stable work history free of repeated disciplinary actions, suspensions, terminations, and resignations
• Free of convictions involving domestic abuse or domestic violence
• Free of any felony convictions
• Free of convictions and violations pertaining to Florida Department of Law Enforcement Good Moral Character guidelines
• Free of misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or false statements
• Free of convictions or pleads of nolo contendere to any 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor within the last three (3) years
• Have not been dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States
• Possess a valid driver license
• Must present proof of automobile insurance upon offer of employment
• Have not been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or control substances in the preceding five (5) year period
• Have not had a driver’s license suspended under the point system in the past five (5) years, as provided for in the Florida Statute, Chapter 322

4. Florida Driver’s License In your full legal name. If you held a driver’s license in another state in the past 10 years you will be required to attach the driving record from that state.
5. High School Diploma High School Diploma or GED. Education Requirements: To be considered valid (or verified) for position qualification purposes, and consistent with City Hiring Policy 4-5, a High School, GED or equivalent diploma, and all higher education degrees or certifications must have been issued by: a) a public education institution in the State of Florida or any State or Territory of the United States; or b) an institution accredited by an accrediting organization that is recognized by the Florida Department of Education or the U.S. Department of Education; or c) an institution that is accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). International degrees will be evaluated to determine if they satisfy qualification requirements.
6. Criminal Justice Training Certified Police Officer in the State of Florida, submit your FDLE certification and state exam results. Out of state certified Police Officer submit your Basic training Certificate or Comparative Compliance Certificate from an accredited criminal justice training center and Florida State exam results. If you are currently enrolled or accepted in a State of Florida Police Academy submit your enrollment letter.
7. Physical Agility Test Successfully complete the Criminal Justice Institute Physical Agility Test from a state accredited facility within one (1) year of application closing date; or successfully complete the City of West Palm Beach physical agility test on the scheduled listing dates.

POLICE OFFICER Job Description:

SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision; performs general and specialized police work involving the enforcement of laws and ordinances; protecting life and property; detection and arrest of violators; crime prevention; community services or other specialized assignments; and performs related duties as assigned. 

STATE OF EMERGENCY:

When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration by the Mayor that a state of emergency exists, all employees will be deemed critical by the City.  For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.  This is a condition of employment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in potentially hostile and/or unsafe work environments.  Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of standing, reaching, lifting arms above shoulder level, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, jumping, crawling, climbing, sitting, talking, hearing, and that may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, opening doors, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (150+ pounds), such as in the event of rescuing a victim/patient in the performance of a rescue operation. When performing police services, tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to occupational health hazards including, but not limited to, non-compliant and violent individuals, fire, extreme temperatures, wetness, humidity, dryness, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, fumes, gases, odors, erratic or unpredictable human behavior, weapons, and explosives. Personal protective equipment applies in the preservation of life and property.   

SWIM TEST 

Knowing how to swim is a requirement for working as a police officer due to several reasons.

First, police officers often encounter water-related incidents involving bodies of water. Being able to swim enables them to navigate these situations safely and effectively.

Second and most importantly, swimming proficiency enhances a police officer's personal safety. It provides them with the confidence and ability to handle unexpected water hazards they may encounter during operations, minimizing the risk of accidents or injuries.

Overall, the requirement to know how to swim for police officers ensures they possess the necessary skills to handle water-related emergencies and protect themselves. 

The West Palm Beach Police Department Swim Test consists of three skills:

 1. Surface Dive and Recover a 5-pound object from bottom of pool at a depth of 13 feet.

 2. 50-yard non-stop swim with long pants on.

 3. Tread water for 5 minutes.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST

The Physical Abilities Test (PAT) of Florida is consistent with National models and industry standards and locally validated based on statewide statistics. Components of the test were designed to simulate actual tasks and essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the job and are conducted in a continuous flow manner that is time-dependent in order to determine the participant’s level of physical condition and aerobic capacity while simulating the physical aspects of the job. These skills were identified through job task analysis and a review of critical job responsibilities requiring physical proficiency. Five primary components, in order to simulate essential functions of an entry-level criminal justice officer, were identified and incorporated into the PAT:

1. exiting a vehicle/opening a trunk;

2. running 220 yards;

3. completing an obstacle course;

4. dragging a 150-pound dummy;

5. obstacle course;

6. running 220 yards;

7. dry firing a weapon six times with each hand; and

8. placing items in a trunk/entering a vehicle.
