Community and Social Services: Connecting Those in Need with Critical Resources
We are thrilled to share two recent success stories from our dedicated Homeless Outreach team. Their tireless efforts and compassionate approach have made a significant impact in our community, and these stories are a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Meet MJ:
MJ, originally from Gainesville, Florida, found herself experiencing homelessness in downtown West Palm Beach after a challenging journey. Her path to our City began with a bus ride to Miami, where she hoped to find work as an entertainer. When her plans fell through, she decided to walk back to Gainesville, making an unexpected stop in West Palm Beach.
After a run-in with law enforcement and a medical emergency, MJ was brought to JFK Medical Center. This is where the Homeless Outreach team stepped in, working closely with WPBPD and the hospital social workers to devise a solution. The team met with MJ and discovered that she had been experiencing homelessness in Gainesville, so after contacting her local shelter to confirm she would be welcomed back safely as a client, the team secured transportation to get her back to her hometown.
This case highlights the effectiveness of the City's outreach efforts and our commitment to addressing homelessness in West Palm Beach. By collaborating with local agencies, we ensure that individuals like MJ receive the help they need.

Meet Trina and George:
Meet Trina and George, a couple whose lives took a difficult turn after being evicted from their apartment in 2020. For years, they have called the streets of West Palm Beach home, often found outside the Mandel Public Library. Their struggles with alcohol use disorder have been profound, and despite completing a recent addiction treatment program, the harsh reality of life on the streets led them back to old habits.
One of the first times our Homeless Outreach team met Trina and George, they had just endured a brutal attack, during which they were robbed of their monthly disability check. Despite their hardships, our team remained vigilant in supporting them — providing hygiene supplies, helping them gather important documentation, and connecting them to vital support services.
Recently, after a long wait on the shelter list, Trina and George were finally offered an available bed. With a combined income of less than $12,000 a year, finding stable housing has been an uphill battle. But today, they are safe in our local shelter program, where they will have 90 days to transition to more permanent housing.
We are rooting for Trina and George as they take this important step toward stability and wish them all the best in their journey ahead.
Help us identify those in need.
As part of our continued efforts to address the issues of homelessness and improving community well-being, the City of West Palm Beach encourages the public to use WPBKey to report concerns about homelessness and where and when City help may be needed. The web-based reporting tool streamlines the process of addressing concerns related to homelessness. Report your concerns here.

This Sunday: 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and 5K Run & Walk
Attend the 6th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Inaugural 5K Walk & Run for charity on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024! This event takes place at 515 N. Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, at 9 a.m., and pays tribute to the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
The West Palm Beach Fire Department 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a solemn occasion to honor and remember the heroes and victims of the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day. Participants will symbolically climb the equivalent of 110 stories, mirroring the harrowing ascent faced by first responders at the World Trade Center.
This year’s 5K and 1-mile race will take participants on an out-and-back course down N. Flagler Drive along the iconic West Palm Beach waterfront. In addition to the stair climb and 5K, the event promises an array of activities for participants and spectators alike, including a friendly CrossFit competition.
Proceeds from this charity event will support two remarkable organizations: Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST) and Operation 300.
