Through its Housing and Community Development (HCD) Department’s Community Services Team, the City of West Palm Beach continues it's efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents by developing housing, social, and economic opportunities. In collaboration with multiple social service providers, City staff work to connect individuals with the resources and support needed to achieve stability and self-sufficiency.
In 2022, after the devastating loss of her child, Jillian fell into a deep depression, resulting in the loss of her job and eventual homelessness, where she found herself sleeping in downtown West Palm Beach. When we first met her sleeping by the waterfront, she was socially withdrawn and declined services.
Our team continued to show up daily. “Good mornings” turned into short conversations, then trust. Jillian eventually agreed to shelter, but repeated 90-day shelter cycles were not enough for her to regain stability.
We coordinated with intensive mental health partners and focused on getting her document-ready, including obtaining things like a state ID, social security card, disability verification, and chronicity certification, so we could move quickly when housing became available. We even assisted in obtaining a free electric bike to help her reliably reach appointments and services.
This year, all of the hard work and patience paid off: a Permanent Supportive Housing unit was available, and Jillian was next on the list. Because the groundwork was complete, she signed her lease and moved into her new home this month, a stable environment coupled with ongoing case management and behavioral-health care support.
We look forward to this new chapter for Jillian and the possibilities that lie ahead now that she has the dignity of a safe space to call home.
