Through its Housing and Community Development (HCD) Department’s Community Services Team, the City of West Palm Beach continues it's efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents by developing housing, social, and economic opportunities. In collaboration with multiple social service providers, City staff work to connect individuals with the resources and support needed to achieve stability and self-sufficiency.
Meet Ms. Sheila—a 69-year-old who has called West Palm Beach home since 1970, when she arrived as a young teen to attend Roosevelt High School. In the 9th grade, she would meet her husband and have her first of 22 children. Her husband was a dedicated FEC Railroad worker who provided safety and stability for Sheila until he passed away in 2022.
After her husbands passing, Sheila found herself in the difficult situation of depending on a motorized scooter and only $1000 a month in disability. After not being able to sustain on her own, she found herself at Currie Park, living unsheltered, and engaging with the Homeless Outreach Team.
Understanding the severity of the situation, outreach attacked every barrier head-on: replacing lost documents, arranging transportation to appointments, and fiercely advocating whenever housing opportunities arose. Through relentless coordination across agencies, we never let up.
And it paid off. Ms. Sheila has now moved into her own Permanent Supportive Housing unit. She pays just 30% of her income in rent, with ongoing case management and in-home services to keep her healthy, safe, and independent.
This month she turned the key to her very own front door for the first time in years. She is excited to have a safe and stable place to finally call her own and we are happy to have helped in any way we could.
Welcome home, Ms. Sheila.
