West Palm Beach Detectives Honored by Family After Murder Arrest

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (September 5, 2025) – In mid-June, 30-year-old Jared Auer was sitting in his car along Old Okeechobee Road when he was approached by an individual. During the encounter, Auer was shot and transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives with the West Palm Beach Police Department Homicide Unit immediately began their investigation. Investigative leads helped identify a suspect and motorcycle, leading detectives Darren MacCarthy and Aaron Sam to develop a suspect identified as 43-year-old William Dunkley.

By early July, a search warrant was obtained for Dunkley’s home and the weapon used in the crime was discovered. Dunkley was arrested and charged with first-degree murder with a handgun and attempted armed robbery.

"Our detectives pursue every lead with the goal of bringing cases to a swift resolution," said Lt. William DeVito. "We are proud of our homicide team for their tenacity and unwavering commitment, not only in solving this case but in tackling other complex investigations that are often difficult to close."

Weeks later, Auer’s parents returned to the department to thank the detectives who had diligently worked the case. They presented commemorative plaques to Detectives MacCarthy and Sam, recognizing their persistence in pursuing justice for their son.
