This week, Mayor Keith A. James was presented with the Marine Advocate Award during the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County's 2025 Annual Member Awards. Mayor James was awarded for his dedication to protecting and promoting the local marine industry.
Highlights from Housing & Community Development
December 2024
Through its Housing and Community Development Department’s (HCD) Homelessness Advocacy and Response Team (HART), the City of West Palm Beach continued its efforts to enhance the quality of life for its residents through the development of housing and social and economic opportunities. Last month, the HCD team provided 381 services to 157 individuals experiencing homelessness.
Celebrating Stories of Growth and Achieved Milestones
One of our most inspiring stories in December follows the journey of Marcellous, a 22-year-old who overcame incredible barriers. After aging out of foster care and experiencing untreated mental health challenges, Marcellous found himself homeless and even banned from some agencies due to behavioral issues.
Desperate for help, Marcellous arrived at the Eva Mack Community Hub. Community Resource Liaison Shakarra McClaine recognized his distress and compassionately listened to his story. She connected him to the Health Care District, where he accessed medication and behavioral health support to stabilize his mental health.
The HCD team then collaborated with Vita Nova, arranging a meeting with upper management and presenting a heartfelt apology letter written by Marcellous alongside a case plan for his success. Their efforts paid off, and Marcellous became the first recipient of funding through Vita Nova’s grant program, which covered his move-in costs and gave him the keys to his very first apartment just in time for the holidays.
Today, Marcellous is thriving. He is housed, on track to complete his GED, and actively seeking employment. His story demonstrates the power of collaboration, compassion, and determination in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
