April is Water Conservation Month: City of West Palm Beach Encourages Residents to Conserve Amid Ongoing Drought

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (April 1, 2026) – The City of West Palm Beach is encouraging residents, businesses, and visitors to take an active role in protecting our most vital natural resource during Water Conservation Month this April.

Now in its 28th year statewide, Water Conservation Month serves as a reminder that water is essential to public health, environmental sustainability, and economic vitality. Conservation is a shared responsibility, and even small changes in daily habits can make a meaningful difference.

This year’s observance comes at a critical time. According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, West Palm Beach is currently experiencing extreme drought conditions. Drought is defined as a moisture deficit severe enough to cause social, environmental, or economic impacts. According to the Drought Center, dry weather has “led to stress in crops and other vegetation and increased wildfire danger.”

To help protect regional water supplies, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has implemented year-round irrigation restrictions, which remain in effect for all West Palm Beach water customers:

  • Landscape irrigation is limited to three days per week, between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m.

  • Even-numbered addresses or other locations without an address may irrigate only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Sundays.

  • Odd-numbered addresses may irrigate only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Saturdays.

  • Property owners may apply no more than ¾ inch to 1 inch of water per week on their lawns and landscapes.

Residents are encouraged to utilize efficient watering methods such as hand-watering, rain barrels, and low-volume irrigation systems. Reclaimed water use is not restricted.

The City remains committed to long-term water stewardship through a range of sustainability initiatives designed to help residents reduce consumption and improve efficiency, including:

  • High-Efficiency Toilet Credit Program: Residents and businesses can receive up to $125 in bill credits by upgrading to high-efficiency toilets, reducing water use while lowering utility costs. Apply here today to start saving.

  • Rain Barrel Program: The City offers free 55-gallon rain barrels through workshops and giveaways, helping residents collect and reuse rainwater for landscaping. The next giveaway will take place on April 11 during the e4 Life Expo at the Cox Science Center and Aquarium STEM Education Center from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Click here to register! (This event is a parking lot pick-up and does not require an admission fee)

  • Free Irrigation Evaluations: Eligible City residents can receive a no-cost irrigation system assessment to identify inefficiencies, reduce water waste, and maintain a healthy landscape. Apply today to optimize your water use.

  • Free Conservation Resources: The City provides tools such as dye tablets, shower timers, and conservation kits to help residents detect leaks and improve water efficiency at home. Email sustainability@wpb.org to request resources.

Water conservation plays a critical role in protecting our environment and ensuring a sustainable future. Through these programs, the City empowers residents and businesses to be part of the solution while supporting a more resilient community. Additional water conservation tips are available here.
