In Summary:

The report recommended changes along US-1 North Dixie Highway to make it safer and easier for everyone—whether you’re walking, biking, riding transit, or driving.

The recommended changes build on the US-1 Multimodal Corridor Study, a 42-mile plan from Boca Raton to Jupiter that was approved in 2018, by the TPA governing board. The 2018 study found the need for:

  • Better Bus Service
  • Safer Sidewalks and Bike Lanes
  • Stronger Connections Between Neighborhoods and Destinations

The 2018 study also showed that the West Palm Beach section of US-1 is one of the most dangerous areas for people walking or biking in the entire corridor.

 

What is recommended:

Today, US-1 between Quadrille Boulevard and 25th Street is a 4-lane road without bike lanes. Sidewalks exist on both sides but vary in width and separation from the street.

The proposed change would:

  • Reduce the road from four lanes to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane.
  • Add buffered bike lanes for safer riding.
  • Add street trees for shade and comfort.
  • Improve space for safer pedestrian crossings

 

Why Reduce Lanes?

National research shows that changing a four-lane road to three lanes with bike lanes can:

  • Reduce crashes for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Make it easier and safer to cross the street.
  • Provide room for new walking and biking facilities without buying more land.

 

Traffic Impacts

Traffic studies looked at what might happen in the future if lanes were reduced:

  • Some drivers (about 32%) would choose nearby roads, mainly Flagler Drive
  • Most intersections would still work well after changes-especially with traffic signal timing adjustments to keep traffic moving

 

Bottom Line

This project is about saving lives, making walking and biking safer, and improving comfort along US-1. While travel patterns may shift, the street would better serve everyone, based on the prioritization of safety.

On December 5, we held the second of two community engagement events to reimagine what a safe and welcoming US 1 would look like in the City of West Palm Beach. Participants had the opportunity to see how their values, identified in the first meeting, translated into roadway concepts that serve the purpose of moving people, creating local economic opportunities and most importantly, keeping people safe.

Project Background & Description

The Dixie Highway Lane Repurposing Project is an outcome of the US-1 Multimodal Corridor Study, a 42-mile, collaborative plan that established a vision for multimodal infrastructure along US-1 corridor throughout Palm Beach County. The US-1 Multimodal Corridor Study was approved by the Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency (TPA) Governing Board in May 2018.

The proposed lane configuration is intended to increase safety, meet the vision of local stakeholders to better match the land use and character of the community, creating a more comfortable experience for all roadway users and support the City's objective to increase mobility.
