West Palm Beach Police Warn Against Celebratory Gunfire, Impaired Driving This Fourth of July

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (June 22, 2026) — As residents prepare to celebrate Independence Day, the West Palm Beach Police Department is reminding the community to make safety a priority by avoiding celebratory gunfire, driving sober, and attending organized events.

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest holidays of the year, bringing increased traffic, large gatherings, and heightened public safety concerns. Officers will be on patrol throughout the holiday to help ensure residents and visitors can celebrate safely.

"Independence Day is a time to come together with family and friends, but celebrations should never put others at risk," said West Palm Beach Chief of Police Tony Araujo. "A single poor decision, whether it's driving impaired or firing a weapon into the air, can have devastating consequences. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday and return home safely."

The department is particularly concerned about celebratory gunfire, which is both illegal and dangerous. Bullets fired into the air eventually return to the ground and can cause serious injury or death to innocent people. Anyone who discharges a firearm recklessly will face criminal charges.

The department is also urging motorists to plan ahead and drive responsibly. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, reaction time, and decision-making abilities. Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel while impaired place themselves and others at risk.

Residents who plan to consume alcohol are encouraged to designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or arrange alternative transportation before celebrating. Community members are also encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.

To enjoy the holiday safely, the West Palm Beach Police Department encourages residents to:

  • Never drive under the influence.
  • Stay alert for pedestrians, bicyclists, and increased holiday traffic.
  • Never engage in celebratory gunfire.
  • Report suspicious or dangerous activity to law enforcement, including celebratory gunfire, to our non-emergency line at 561-822-1900, or call 911 in case of an emergency.
  • Attend organized community celebrations, including the City of West Palm Beach's annual 4th on Flagler event.

The West Palm Beach Police Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day and asks all residents to do their part to protect the community by celebrating responsibly.
